A tale of high seas adventure is promised with next month's launch of my latest book, Driven by the Wind, the memoir of Captain Henry Rose, published by River Press. What started out as a family history project developed into a commercial book which will be launched in Mapua on 7 August, in Wellington on 14 August and in Lyttelton in early September. Henry Rose was born in central America in the 1830s to English parents and, after returning to England following his father's death, became an ship's apprentice. He worked his way steadily up through the ranks on board a variety of clipper ships, before taking command of his own ships. Incorporating Henry's memoirs, written in his retirement, Driven by the Wind tells of exhilarating races between clippers carrying new season's tea from China, avoiding icebergs in the Southern Ocean, witnessing the use of cat-o-nine tails punishment, transporting convicts to Australia and immigrants to Canterbury, New Zealand. After taking a land-based job in Wellington as branch manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Henry was elected to the very first Wellington Harbour Board, becoming a man of influence in that city. The book is available through River Press https://www.riverpress.co.nz/ and in bookstores.
