It's been simmering away in the background for several years while other projects were completed but the history of Nelson's Italian community is back on track and heading for completion. My project partner Karen Price and I have already had a week's writing retreat in Collingwood - see the pic - and are heading back there later this month for another week.
The story of Nelson's Italian community is a fascinating one and we know there is a lot of interest in it, not only amongst the community itself, but also the wider Nelson public and in Wellington, where there is also a strong Italian connection.
We've interviewed many Italian families, both here and in Wellington, over the last few years and are now busy writing their stories. Running alongside these are the wider stories of tomato growing in Nelson, Itallian culture, food, education, marriage and faith. Above all, this history is one of assimilation and adaptation in a new country.
